A day in the garden.

We have had the most beautiful day today, warm and sunny. Just perfect for working in the garden, so I have been outside tidying and clearing some of the flower beds.

The sun made the butterflies come out too. This lovely butterfly caught my attention, and I photographed it while it had a little rest on a stone in the sunshine. I love the shadow too :)

The butterfly almost made me forget my gardening plans, but as it flew away I got started on tidying one of the flower beds by the house.
Oh well, what a mess. This year I am decided to make an effort to do more tidying in the garden in autumn to make the job easier next spring!
Before:

Og etter:

And after:

When removing the dry remains of last year's foliage I noticed several perennials and bulb shoots breaking through the soil. Among them bleeding hearts, lady's mantles and daffodils :)

Videre rundt hjørnet.

Further around the corner.

Og etter:

And after:

In this flower bed coutchgrass keeps creeping in from the lawn, and it was quite a job removing it all along with a gazillion of selfseeded valerian sprouts.

Følger med :)

Following closely :)

Here it's all cleared and weeded.
There are three bushes growing in line here, and I am planning to plant creeping forget-me-not as groundcover. I think a carpet of blue flowers underneath the bushes would be pretty in spring.

I did tidy and clear out all around the house before I stopped.
In the background in the photo above you can see that there is a lot to do around the herb garden too...
If the weather allows it I will spend tomorrow in the garden too :)

So much hard work. I used to also think that I would clear out more dead stalks etc in the fall, but each year I notice that the little spring birds that just pass through here on their migration north find all sorts of goodies under the dead stalks ... especially little wood thrushes. So I leave some (well, a lot!) and say it's for the birds ;) Your garden is coming up quickly. I have yet to get going on mine as we keep falling back to 0'c and snow! awful Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Wendy
