Bean sprouts and more.

Well... I have been testing out my new sprouting box lately, growing sprouts for food.
It turned out it was not as easy as I first thought, resulting in some ups and downs, but on the positive side is that I am learning along the way.

What I have tried sprouting are seeds of mung beans, alfalfa and raddish.
All three sorts of seeds sprouted rather quickly, but then there was a little bit of fuzz.

The alfalfa seeds were of no good quality, I think. Firstly it took longer than it said for them to sprout, and secondly a large amount of the seeds did not sprout at all.
This resulted in a cluster of sprouts and unsprouted seeds, that did not look tempting to eat.
I will try again, with seeds from a different package.

The raddish seeds sprouted in no time, but then they started growing mold.
I believe I am to blame for this, as I probably watered the sprouts too much.
The next time I will water more sparsely.

Sprouting mung been seeds has been most successful so far :)
At the first try I put way too many seeds in the sprouting tray, which made the tray very crowded as the seeds started sprouting.
The next time I used a smaller amount of seeds, which turned out much better. There was enough space for the sprouts, and I managed to consume them all before they were overdue.
I have had salad and bean sprouts beside my dinner every day lately.

Mung bean sprouts contain proteins and vitamins A, C and E.
1 part seeds makes 4 parts sprouts.

I used to sprout seeds. Some seeds grow aerial hairs that can look like mould but isn't necessarily mould - if you see what I mean. I rinsed my 3 trays each morning with a pint of water. I then lift them to drip. Before re-stacking, I used a sheet of kitchen paper to wipe the undersides of each tray, then re-stacked. The bottom tray that catches the water (if doing it in situ) needs to emptied and washed out each day.Although they are good on a windowsill, too much sunlight creates condensation which can lead to mould. Fenugreek seeds are quite nice sprouted. I also sprouted aduki beans. Hope this helps.

Crystalrainbow: Thank you :) It is fun, and I hope they will be worth the wait :)

Datacreata: I'm so happy for the advise :) This is of great help! Thanks so much, I really appreciate it :)

I have been wanting to try this myself. I bought a book but then a friend borrowed it. LOL Maybe when I get it back I will try. Another friend uses stockings to make her sprouts. She cuts the foot off (new ones of course) and puts her seeds inside wetting it everyday and hanging it up. Seems to work for her as she is always munching on fresh sprouts; Worth a try.
