Making butter.

.

Still no butter to find at the grocery store today, so I went ahead and made butter this evening.
I have made butter before as well, so I know that it is quick and easy to make.
Butter can be made from cream, or from sour cream or from a mix of both..

I made butter from a mix of nearly a liter of cream and 3 dl of sour cream. It all went into the foodprocessor bowl along with 2 teaspoons of salt.
Then it was just to let the machine do the job. The prosess from cream to whipped cream to butter takes a few minutes.
The moment when the milk separates from the butter is very messy, so a closed bowl works best.

Her er smøret ferdig.

Here the butter is done.
The largest lumps were easy to just lift out, and the rest was strained off and put into a bowl.

For the butter to store well it is important to remove as much remaining milk of as possible from the butter. First I let the butter rinse under running water (cold) to clean it, and then pressed off as much milk as I could manage.

Ferdig :)

Voila - the finished butter :)
The buttermilk can be used for baking, so it was poured into a jar and put in the freezer to be spent later.

In the old prechristian Norse society housekeeping itself (womens work) was surrounded by rituals because it was considered magical.
Sometimes, f.ex it could happen that a woman while making butter fell into trance from the rythmic repeating movements, and got prophetic visions.
Making butter today is not the same as it once used to be, but in my opinion it is still magic :) :)

Thanks so much for sharing this! :D
Your home made butter looks delicious! I might try to make some too.

I totally agree with you about the magic in little things. I feel it too, especially when I'm making a piece of jewelry, painting, or cooking. ^_^ I wonder if guys feel this magic, or if it's just for us girls? :P

This really is magical and so inspiring! I´m totally impressed and I´ll have to try this out. I have friends in Finnland who always make their own butter... they mix it with eggs and it´s so yummi!

Hi Hilde, I too love making butter but don't it as often as I used to. It is also great to have your own home made buttermilk for bread or scones as well.

...making butter has to be one of the most satisfying processes! It is true--a trance-like and magical process.
