Dyeing: Variegated yarn.

Resultatet:

A little while ago I came across this blogpost about dyeing variegated yarn with food colouring.
I was surprised to read that it was possible to dye yarn with food colouring, I had no idea about that... but as I love yarn dyeing I wanted to give it a try - and so I did.

In my kitchen cupboard I had only green food colouring, and at the grocery store I found only red and green, so those two colours were the only ones I used for these dyes. I used the tutorial from the blogpost and did three separate dyes.
The yarn is 100% wool, superwash quality.

And the result:

The red food colouring turned purple when heated. I also mixed red and green for brown colour, however the mix changed during heating to either green or purple on the yarn.
It was a bit difficult to get the colour out evenly in the dyed parts, so the colours differ slightly in strength and amount in every skein.

This really was a fun experiment, though not entierly successfull as for how the colours turned out.
I have no idea whether the dye is light fast or not, so I will leave the skeins in sunlight for a while to see if the colours fade.

I really like the result of your experiment - I´m looking forward to see what you do with it. This yarn looks so soft... what kind of yarn is it?

Oh its so beautiful. I always love your yarn colours. One day I hope to try yarn dying myself. I am especially keen to try using Tansy. I just don't have the time lately for new things. Not enough hours in the day. Sigh.

Thank you, Kristin and Karisma :)

The yarn is really nice and soft, it is common superwash wool yarn from Trysil.

Well even though it wasn't what you expected, I think the results are beautiful with the subtle shading. I hope it doesn't fade in the sunlight! Wendy

Well, that's a pretty nice result isn't it ! Your very own variegated yarn ! Maybe I'll try it myself one day.
I'm thinking on how to do it with plant dyes.
Have a nice day Hilde !

Går an å google vet du..

This is awesome Hilde! I LOVE the colors and I hope they will be light fast!

P.S. For so long I wanted to ask you: did your mom like your Christmas present? :-)

A dear hug to you!

They may not have turned out as you expected, but they are very beautiful none the less. I would love to see them knitted up. I adore greens and soft heather shades mixed together so these are just perfect.
